Research Areas
Professor Takashi Gojobori is currently a Yushan Scholar in the Department of Life Sciences at National Cheng Kung University and a Professor at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He previously served as Deputy Director of the National Institute of Genetics (NIG), Japan, and is internationally renowned for his research in molecular evolution and population genetics. He became a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006, and has been a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences since 2007. He has also been awarded honorary professorships by several internationally well-known universities. In 2014, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from National Cheng Kung University and has served as an editor for several important journals.

Professor Gojobori was the Ph.D. supervisor of His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Fumihito of Japan in 1996, and has collaborated with former Emperor Akihito of Japan for more than 25 years on fish DNA evolution research, and they have jointly published three international academic papers. He has published more than 580 peer-reviewed international journal articles. His research interests include comparative genomics and gene expression.

Professor Gojobori’s outstanding achievements include receiving the Kihara Memorial Foundation Academic Award in 1995, and being awarded the Order of the Rising Sun and the Japanese Medal of Honor in 2009 for his pioneering contributions to “molecular evolution of genomic information.” He is an Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), a member of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), and a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). In August this year, he received an award for promoting scientific and technological cooperation between Japan and Saudi Arabia, and was invited to attend the 2024 fiscal year award ceremony of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
